THE ASHANTI SOUTH REGION

The Ashanti South Region formed part of the Ashanti Region with Kumasi as its capital.

The Ashanti South Region, as the name implies occupies the southern part of the then Ashanti Region.  It has six operational Districts whose boundaries are independent of the normal political administrative boundaries of Local Government.

Trade, commerce and farming are the leading economies in the Region.  Other sources of income available relate to substantial gold deposits and other export products such as cocoa and high-quality hardwoods.

SOURCE OF WATER SUPPLY

The Ashanti South Region gets its water supply from the Barekese Headworks which currently produces an average of 22 MGD.  Out of this, the Ashanti South Region receives an average of 10 MGD for distribution in four out of the six operational Districts.  The other two Districts have their own water supply systems.  The Region currently has a customer strength of 40,000.  This number increases by an average of one hundred and fifty (150) customers a month through new service connections.  This number could increase substantially if the distribution system could be extended to cover new developing communities.

The Ashanti South Region serves two major industrial customers – Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited and Everpure (Bottling Water Plant).  Most of the essential government institutions in the Kumasi metropolis are also located in the Ashanti South Region and  GWCL in this region supply all of them with well treated and purified enough water.Ing. Edward Kwabena Agyekum is currently the Regional Chief Manager for Ashanti North Region of the GWCL

THE ASHANTI NORTH REGION

The Ashanti North Region has a distribution network of about 722 km consisting of about 603km in the city districts and about 119km in the rural districts. The spatial coverage of the city districts is 75,704 ha and that of the rural districts is 31,450 ha.

There are minor systems at strategic locations such as Agona and Effiduase-Asokore which is under the Mampong district; likewise, Tepa which is under North West, Nkenkasu and Akomadan captured under Offinso district.

WATER SUPPLY IN ASHANTI NORTH REGION

The Ashanti North Region is served by Eight (8) water treatment plants comprising of five (5) surface water systems at Barekese, Owabi, Mampong, Aframso and Tanoso and three (3) borehole systems at Effiduase, Tepa and Agona.

Treated water is pumped from high-lift pumping stations at Barekese and Owabi treatment plants to serve Six (6) city Districts and most part of Offinso District. Primary storage of the water before distribution comprises 4No. storage tanks, 1No. elevated and 3No. Ground level at Suame. Distribution of water is carried out to some consumer areas directly from the reservoirs while part of the stored water further transmitted to other 2No. booster stations for further distribution to other consumer areas. There are three (3) Booster Stations namely Achiase, Pankrono and Buokrom and three (3) secondary service tanks at Nkawie, Offinso.

Mampong and environs are served by high lift pumping station at Mampong and whereas Kumawu and environs are served by high lift pumping station at Aframso. Nkenkasu and Akomadan which are part of Offinso District are also served by Tanoso Treatment Plant.

Customers are served mainly through house connections supplemented with public standpipes within the various sectors of the supply area.Mr. Francis Mensah is currently the Chief Manager for Ashanti North Region GWCL
